Berwick library looks to reach out to children

ME - Those who run the library want the public to know just how much the library has to offer, and although the new facility was built nearly a year-and-a-half ago, Library Director Sandy Broomfield said, "We're still trying to let the people of Berwick know we're here." One resident not only knows the library is in town, but has decided to help them out. Laura Drew of Berwick, owner of the online business CountryMooseKids.com, which sells high-end children's' gifts, donated a small table normally sold through her business.

The table, which the library received just last week, has a toy train set on the tabletop with which children can play.

The train table has a 27-piece train set and blocks, and Broomfield said they were "absolutely thrilled" when Drew offered the toy to the library.

"(The table) was definitely good to utilize for this purpose," Drew said. "It was a perfect fit for that area."

The table has been placed next to a play castle at the library, giving visiting youngsters fun things to do.

"We're trying to get more kids into the library," Broomfield said. "The table is just another attraction for children to play with."

Drew said she likes to make donations from her business to local libraries and other programs that serve the community.

"I especially like donating to programs that have helped us," Drew said. "It's part of my business, and, of course, I want to make money, but I also love to give back."

Drew said she has three other tables she would like to donate to other places in the area.

At the public library, Broomfield said they are getting busier as they add more activities for the children, such as puzzle tables and a story time on Fridays from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. before the library opens.

They also offer elementary computer classes and display local artist exhibits around the library.

"We want to see patrons come in," Broomfield said.

The library is located on the corner of Sullivan and Pine Hill roads and is open Monday through Tuesday from 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call (207) 698-5737.
